Your corn stalks may be doing more than taking up space after harvest. They could also be influencing how much nitrogen is available to your next crop.
Here's why:
Corn residue has a relatively high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. As soil microorganisms begin breaking it down, they need nitrogen to support that process. When the residue doesn't provide enough, those microbes can temporarily use nitrogen from the surrounding soil.
It's called nitrogen immobilization, sometimes referred to as the carbon penalty.
And while that nitrogen isn't necessarily lost, it can become temporarily unavailable to the crop while microbes are using it.
That's one reason residue management deserves attention beyond simply clearing the field for spring planting.
Decomp™ from Yield Innovations is formulated with microbial food sources and Bacillus bacteria intended to accelerate residue breakdown and support nutrient recycling. The goal is to help move that decomposition process along and reduce the challenges associated with heavy crop residue. What happens to this year's stalks can influence the growing conditions for next year's crop.
