Everyone wants to keep the planter rolling this time of year. But the better decision is not always about the date on the calendar. It is about the conditions in the field.

Planting into moisture works if:

Soil is fit
Sidewalls are not being smeared
You are setting up the crop for uniform emergence

Waiting is the better move when:

Soil is tacky
Compaction is being created
Conditions are likely to improve in the next 24 to 48 hours

The real difference shows up in the root system 30 days from now. If roots are limited early, yield potential is limited early. We would rather plant a few days later into better conditions than fight uneven emergence all season. If you are questioning a field right now, it is probably worth a second look.

Ohio soil moisture this spring has generally been adequate thanks to a wet March, but April has turned drier in parts of the state, especially central and southern Ohio. Conditions are not broadly droughty statewide, but localized drying is becoming more noticeable and could start to affect emergence, root development, and early-season uniformity where rains have missed.

NANO pHLOW™: Cleaner water, tighter chemistry for Enlist applications

NANO pHLOW™ is now approved for use with Enlist One® and Enlist Duo® , giving Enlist applicators a water-first tool that helps condition the carrier and optimize pH before loading herbicides and other tank mix partners.

Most spray loads start with hard water, and hard water can quietly steal performance. Many tank-mixed pesticides and crop inputs work best in a slightly acidic solution, but typical carrier water often runs higher pH and contains calcium and magnesium that can interfere with performance.

NANO pHLOW™ is built to fix the water first. It’s a water conditioner designed to lower spray solution pH, tie up hard-water minerals, and support better droplet behavior and leaf interaction so the rest of the tank can do its job.

What it does in the tank

Lowers pH with a visual indicator (Spectra technology) and helps manage hard-water minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron.
Improves adhesion and absorption (LeafLink™) to help inputs interact with the leaf surface more effectively.

Planting Date Matters

Utilize practices like planting early with the correct seeding rate, at the correct planting depth and into the correct conditions to get your seed off to a good start. Multi-year PFR data shows that planting early pays in most years. Planting early gives the crop more opportunity to capture sunlight and allows for more carbohydrates to be produced and potentially stored for use during grain fill.

Based on 25 years of multi-location data, planting within the optimum window can have a significant impact on yield potential:

March 16–31: 96%
April 1–15: 102%
April 16–30: 107%
May 1–15: 105%
May 16–31: 101%
June 1–15: 88%
June 16–30: 81%

Skipped Fall Spray? Spring Burndown Is Critical

If fall weed control was skipped, spring burndown just became a whole lot more important. Heading into planting with heavy emerged weed pressure creates a tougher situation for your entire herbicide program. Instead of starting clean, your pre-emergent herbicides are forced to work against established biomass before the crop even emerges.

That matters because dense weed canopy can intercept soil-applied residuals before they ever reach the target zone. When that happens, pre-herbicide efficacy can drop, and surviving weeds gain an early advantage against the crop. The longer those weeds remain in the field, the more they compete for light, moisture, and nutrients right out of the gate.

A clean start still matters. If fields were not treated last fall, now is the time to make spring burndown a priority. Strong planning, timely applications, and the right burndown approach can help reset the field before planting and give pre-emergent products a better chance to do their job.

Beck’s Acquires SOYLEIC™ from Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council

Atlanta, Ind. — Beck’s, the largest family-owned seed company and third largest seed brand, today announced they’ve acquired the exclusive licensing rights of the SOYLEIC™ soybean patents from the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council (MSMC), marking a significant milestone in farmer-driven innovation and expanding new market opportunities for farmers across the United States.

Developed through decades of farmer-funded research at the University of Missouri and United States Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), SOYLEIC® soybeans are a high oleic, low linolenic variety designed to deliver soybean oil with improved stability and performance without hydrogenation. This results in a longer shelf life, improved performance under high-heat, and a domestically sourced alternative to imported oils. These benefits directly connect farmer production to growing end-user demand.

“This is a major win for farmers,” said Casey Wasser, CEO and executive director of Missouri Soybeans. “SOYLEIC represents years of research, investment, and persistence. Beck’s acquisition validates that work and ensures this technology has a clear path to scale, stability, and long-term value.”

MSMC spent years protecting the integrity of the trait, supporting university research and building pathways toward commercialization. With this acquisition, Beck’s will now lead those efforts by expanding seed production, supporting agronomic placement, and developing market channels to take high oleic soybeans to the next level.

“This investment transitions SOYLEIC from a successful, farmer-funded research initiative into a scalable commercial product,” said Scott Beck, president of Beck's. “With our footprint across the U.S., the technology is now positioned to reach more farmers and deliver a consistent supply to processors and end users."

Beck’s is making the SOYLEIC trait broadly available to other current and pending seed licensees, while continuing to expand SOYLEIC throughout the US. All farmers can continue to enjoy the benefits of SOYLEIC in brands they know. Beginning with the 2027 growing season, Beck’s plans to offer two SOYLEIC non-gmo varieties as well as three SOYLEIC+TECH™ soybean varieties, with the SOYLEIC + TECH varieties featuring the Enlist® E3 trait package. This positions farmers with a competitive, high-value option in a growing specialty soybean market.

SOYLEIC is a naturally occurring trait, which provides flexibility in trait integration and removes certain regulatory barriers when stacking future technologies, which will be a crucial advantage as new traits continue to emerge.

Late Winter / Early Spring Checklist

To help maximize efficiency and avoid costly mistakes, we are providing you with this checklist of activities to complete before planting.

SEED

Place seed in the barn by your intended planting order.
Put a piece of paper on the bags or boxes with the intended field name and population that you intend to plant.
Double check your acres with your delivered seed and planting populations to ensure you have enough.

CHEMISTRY

Stage chemistry products in your barn by both crop and application.
Some product totes look similar. Ensure product labels are facing outward, in your line of sight, and similar looking labels/totes are not stacked together by mistake.
Recirculate ALL chemistry totes prior to use.
Calibrate pumps and meters close to the time of use. The viscosity of chemistry changes as the temperature changes and will alter your calibration.
Clean all pumps and meters with TripleRinse tank cleaner to ensure no residues are left behind.
TripleRinse tank cleaner and FoamAway defoamer. Do you have a case of each?
Do you have enough chemistry products for your acres and use rate of each product? Double check all math.
Prior to spraying, ensure all screens/nozzles have been thoroughly cleaned and the sprayer triple rinsed with TripleRinse tank cleaner.

NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS

Prior to bulk delivery of YieldStarters or YieldBuilder foliars, bulk tanks must be thoroughly emptied and cleaned if they were used for 28% or Thio-Sul in the past. No 28% or Thio-Sul can be left in the tank at all. Vitaliz cannot come in contact with UAN.
If planter pumps/lines were winterized with UAN or anti-freeze, thoroughly clean out both pumps and lines prior to putting row starter products in your planter tanks.
Check and clean all screens on your planter
Recirculate fertilizer totes prior to use. Bubble or recirculate bulk nutritional tanks to prevent any settling of raw ingredients. This is especially important if you took Fall delivery of these products.
On your tender trailer, if using both 2x2 and in-furrow, ensure that plumbing is done in such a way to not have UAN come in contact with your in-furrow YieldStarters.
Double check your use rates and acres with delivered product to ensure you have enough.

Liberty ULTRA Raises Maximum Use Rate for Stronger Weed Control in 2026

BASF has announced an important update to Liberty® ULTRA herbicide: the maximum single-pass rate has increased from 29 fl oz/ac to 34 fl oz/ac , giving growers more power and flexibility to manage weed pressure in corn and soybeans.

The higher use rate delivers 20% more active ingredient per application , which allows Liberty ULTRA to outperform generic glufosinate, especially when weed pressure is high or spray timing gets delayed.

Research shows that Liberty ULTRA at 34 fl oz/ac:

provides 20% better control than generic glufosinate on 5–8" weeds in wet conditions
performs more consistently in dry, low-humidity environments results in 3.5× fewer resprays compared to generic glufosinate at max rates

The new rate structure now offers:

24–34 fl oz/ac per pass
Up to 69 fl oz/ac annual m aximum

Heading into 2026, growers should update spray plans, tank mixes, and budgets to reflect the new rate and talk with their TriAg agronomist to determine whether the higher rate is the best fit for their acres.

Driving: Operate Class A trucks to deliver products safely and on time.

This position is ideal for a reliable, motivated individual who values being home most nights and working in a team-focused environment.
